"Real, Equal Americans"

It’s not often I get political on this site.  But yesterday…

Well, Friday morning, I was pretty blasé about the US Supreme Court decision on gay marriage, when two co-workers asked if I'd heard the news.  By the afternoon I drove home from work and caught the NPR report with a tape of the reaction on the steps of the court and the telephone call to plaintiff Jim Obergefell from the President. I made it into my driveway—and sat in my car, crying, for about 15 minutes...

  1. I love when you once in awhile give this part of you! Standing in the making of history! Tears! can be unspeakable joy! More than a thousand tongues!

    1. You are right, of course.

I wrote a f-bud a similar message as the one I posted here. He wondered why in the world I’d cry. My response was “Happiness? Relief? That the man who brought the suit and had such an incredibly touching story actually won? That it finally validates how I've lived with my life?” I suppose there was also some regret that it’s arrived too late for the long term relationship in my life. I wonder if we would have ever gotten around to a ceremony…I really have no idea.

My Brother in NYC had a similar reaction to mine. He wrote: “I felt the need to go and gather with others in front of the Stonewall.” I could wish I was there—and not in my driveway…

  2. There was definitely a really good vibe in NYC over pride!

I have to confess that I often fight back tears listening to NPR and I really don't think of myself as emotional... And it doesn't even have to have a personal tie in. Some of the programming are just good stories that help me fight back the usual cynicism that comes with the news. Not political but perspectives on life through a lens of discovery, awe, joy and beauty.

    1. I have never been to NYC for pride. This year, it must have been really electric.

I love NPR. And I agree with your take on it. I am moved by a variety of stories--since they take the time for us to get to know more about the people involved. And All Things Considered lives up to its name...

  3. We are still in a bit of shock. I knew it would happen in my lifetime but the decision still rings like a rumor to me. Its like this huge door has been opened in front of us. Will we be able to walk through it? - Jack & Joey
